Birding Buenos Aires – Southern Entre Ríos – 3 days / 2 nights – August 4-6

Birding Buenos Aires

Southern Entre Ríos (3 days / 2 nights) – COMPLETE DETAILS

The south of Entre Ríos province is one of the most productive birding areas in Argentina, and the best place in Buenos Aires surroundings. Although not being formally protected, the regions preserves very good habitats or birds and wildlife, with an interesting combination of Espinal forest, marshes and Pampas grassland. This gives refuge to an unsuspected diversity of birds, with a total list of over 300 species, including iconic pampas species such as Greater Rhea, as well as endangered and range restricted specialties such as Saffron-cowled Blackbird, Straight-billed Reedhaunter and Bay-capped Wren-spinetail, among many others.

But southern Entre Ríos is not just about bird diversity: it’s also a land of abundance. This is especially evident while visiting the huge wetlands where it is possible to see hundreds of Maguari and Wood storks, Southern Screamers, Snail Kites and a plethora of herons and egrets. This, combined with the typical Argentine pampas landscape, with real gauchos and warm small town people, plus good stake and wine, makes of this area an incredible birding destination, and a “must go” place because its proximity to Buenos Aires.

This tour gives a good insight to the south of Entre Ríos, visiting the best spots whithin it, starting and ending in Buenos Aires city.

Birding Buenos Aires – Jujuy birding route – 6 days / 5 nights – August 12-17

Birding Buenos Aires

Chaco lowlands and Austral Yungas forest (6 days / 5 nights) – COMPLETE DETAILS

Option tour complement to Pre-Puna, Puna and High Andes (August 18-23). North-west Argentina is famous for its diversity of landscapes, wildlife and cultures. In a relatively small area it is possible to travel from the subtropical warm plains of the eastern lowlands to the high altitude cold Andean peaks, with a wide array of habitats and landscapes in between. This produces a very high bird diversity that goes from toucans and trogons to flamingoes and condors, just to mention a few iconic species. This trip comprises all major habitats of north-west Argentina, in a fairly new birding route that has been designed by us to take the best advantage of a relatively short period of time.

Trogon Tours – Northern Pampas – 1 day – August 13

Trogon Tours

Northern Pampas (1 day… many birds!) – COMPLETE DETAILS

August 13. A tour designed for those coming through Buenos Aires. The Pampa is an extensive humid plain shared by Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. In Argentina, the Pampa Grassland covers an area of more than 50 million hectares in the central part of the country. This unique habitat is well represented in the Province of Buenos Aires, where birders and naturalists can enjoy nature in a diversity of wildlife reserves spread throughout its territory.

The Argentine Pampas are well known around the world mainly by the famous “Gauchos” -Argentine equivalent to the North American cowboys- and for the supreme quality of the Argentine beef, which is mainly produced in the “Estancias” (cattle farms), located in this part of the country.

It was here where the famous British-Argentine naturalist and author William Henry Hudson was born. Hudson wrote many moving stories about the life and customs of the Gauchos, and he also described in full detail many birds and animals of the Pampas. He was highly impressed by all the effort and hard work put by the Rufous Hornero when building its adobe nest, and as a matter of fact, years after Hudson wrote about the Hornero, the bird was selected to be Argentina’s national bird for its working nature.

Trogon Tours – Urugua-í & La Araucaria Provincial Parks – 2 days / 1 nights – August 13-14

Trogon Tours

Urugua-í & La Araucaria Provincial Parks (2 days / 1 night) – COMPLETE DETAILS

August 13-14. The most important forest south of the Amazon is formed by a set of subtropical rainforests including the Brazilian “Mata Atlántica” and the Interior Atlantic Forest in the Argentine province of Misiones. These forests host dozens of unique species of orchids, small primates, bats of rare habits and endemic birds.

Around one million hectares of the highly endangered Interior Atlantic Forest still stand in patches spread throughout the Argentine province of Misiones. Thanks to the efforts made by several local conservation organizations and individuals, most of them have been declared provincial reserves, and at the present they are linked to each other and to Iguazú National Park, forming a big, single conservation unit, known as the Green Corridor. This continuous forest cover supports healthy populations of big mammals, such as Jaguar, South American Tapir and Giant Anteater among others. There are areas of the Green Corridor where the forest canopy is dominated by giant Monkey-puzzle Trees (Araucaria angustifolia). This Araucaria forest cherishes some true forest jewels, such as Araucaria Tit-Spinetail, Red Howler Monkey and the rare Vinaceous-breasted Parrot.

Trogon Tours – Brazilian Atlantic Forest – 5 days / 4 nights – August 13-17

Trogon Tours

Brazilian Atlantic Forest (5 days / 4 nights) – COMPLETE DETAILS

August 13-17. A tour designed for those coming through Sao Paulo. The Atlantic Forest, often referred to as the ‘Mata Atlântica’, stretches across a distance of more than 3,000 kilometres along the mountain ranges which run more or less parallel to the Brazilian coast. This unique ecosystem has one of the highest biodiversities in the world, and at the same time is one of the most threatened. It is where the ancient Araucarias and the legendary “Pau Brasil” grow and the bizarre Tamarin Monkeys are to be found, as well as the largest number of endemic species of birds in the whole of South America. This spectacular ecosystem was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993 and so a large percentage of the remaining habitats are protected in nature reserves.

Intervales State Park is situated on a 3,300 ft high escarpment, the Serra de Paranapiacaba, southwest of Sao Paulo and north of Curitiba. The park consists of 4 adjacent reserves covering some 450 sq. miles and contains pristine Atlantic forest over an altitudinal gradient from nearly sea level to 3,000 ft. elevation and it is widely known for its fantastic birding, and many birders consider the park the highlight of their tour of southeast Brazil.
