OPENS: March 20th

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR TRAVEL AND PRESENTATION AWARDS: May 15th

GENERAL DEADLINE: June 9th

The Scientific Committee of the Ornithological Congress of the Americas invites you to submit an abstract for consideration as an oral presentation or scientific poster. The submission period is March 20th, 2017 – June 9th, 2017. Abstracts are limited to 250 words, and should have a concise and informative title of no more than 100 characters. Abstracts should include clear results; those with no or vague results will not be considered in the program. All abstracts and titles should be written in two languages—English and either Spanish or Portuguese. All submissions should go through the OSNA Member Portal (additional instructions HERE). All applicants will have to set up an account through the portal to submit an abstract, even if they are not members of one of the OSNA societies.

Authors should rank which presentation format they prefer (i.e., oral presentation or poster). Attendees will typically be allowed to be the presenting author (first author) for only one (1) presentation in either the general sessions or symposia. The presenting author must be the first author of the research presented. The scientific committee reserves the right to make the final decisions regarding presentations.

Students applying for travel/registration awards must submit their abstract by the May 15th deadline. Presenting students will not automatically be considered for a travel award; instead they must submit a separate application for a travel award to be considered from one of the participating societies (see information here). There is a common pdf document to the three societies that students have to complete and submit in order for the Student Awards’ Committee to be able to organize and rank all awards, including presentation awards. Each society will give awards following their own guidelines, so it is important that students follow the instructions carefully. Students applying for travel awards from the Sociedade Brasileira de Ornitología should be enrolled in a Brazilian institution and be members of the Brazilian Ornithological Society. Students applying for awards from Aves Argentinas should only be from an Argentine university and be members of Aves Argentinas.. Students applying for travel awards from Association of Field Ornithologists can be of any nationality but should be members of AFO at the time of abstract submission. If you are a student applying for a travel/registration award from any one of the three participating societies you need to submit an expanded abstract in addition to the regular abstract. The expanded abstract must be written in English and be no more than 2 pages of double-spaced text and 12 point or larger font size. All students (undergraduate and/or graduate students) submitting an abstract as presenters and first authors willing to be considered for a presentation award will have the opportunity to be part of this competition. Please make sure you check the appropriate box on the pdf form for the student awards.

Presenters should pay registration when submitting an abstract (either before or at the time of submission), except for students applying for registration awards from Aves Argentinas. By submitting an abstract, presenters agree to present a talk or poster (if it is selected) at the Ornithological Congress of the Americas.

When preparing your abstract for submission through the OSNA Member Portal please take into consideration the following instructions:

  • The body of the abstract should be in Times New Roman 11 point.
